Tomintoul '15' - With a Peaty Tang
Bottled at 40%
Cask Type: American oak ex-bourbon casks.
This Speyside single peated malt scotch whisky is aged for 15 years in hand-picked American oak ex-bourbon casks. Tomintoul blends both peated and unpeated spirit to give the whisky it's 'Peaty Tang' name.
Nose. Floral with Vanilla, Honey and Peat.
Palate. Sweet Malt, Earthy Peat and Fruit.
Finish. Spices, Lemon, Oak and Toffee.
This one started with freshly picked flowers, a soothing fragrance that provided a floral aroma. Next, creamy vanilla, which gave a silky soft and very inviting smell to the whisky. Following this, you get very sweet and luscious honey. Also included on the nose was a glimmer of peat; a light and musty smell that added significant interest moving forward.
On the palate, flavourings of sweet malt established base notes. Immediately next, more of the peat influence is present, giving notes of earthy peat this time, it's a lot more prominent on the palate than the nose though. Additionally, a juicy green apple note comes through and provided a memorable fruity flavour.
The finish is medium and spicy with ginger and clove being the main flavours generating a strong winter spiciness. Now, you receive a lemon lift, which is slightly tart, but a welcomed and pleasing accessory to the whisky. Next, a wood-like flavour such as oak is present. The tasting finished with a very tasty toffee note that added balance.
